Basketmouth
Bright Okpocha, aka Basketmouth, started comedy in 1995. It wasn’t a profession for him until three years later, when he was advised to hit the big stage at the University of Benin, where he studied Sociology and Anthropology. Basketmouth’s emergence in Lagos can also be traced back to the year 2000, when he performed at a concert called “Hanging out with the Home Boys.” His performance wowed the crowd enormously. From that point, the demand started. One of his biggest breaks was when he hosted This Day-Music Concert, which featured Joe, Boyz II Men, Sean Paul, Wyclef Jean, Cool and the Gang, Akon, Dru Hill, Busta Rhymes, Jay Z, Beyoncé, Fat Joe, Snoop Dogg, Ciara, Chris Brown and many more. Basketmouth started hosting his one-man stand-up comedy shows in Lagos in 2001. The show took a big leap to the UK, where he sold out the Indigo2 in 2008. He subsequently sold out the Hammersmith Apollo and the Wembley Arena, becoming the first African comedian to do so. Basketmouth has also hosted The MTV Base Big Friday Show, Comedy Central Special, Comedy Central’s Ridiculousness and much more. He went on to perform at some comedy festivals, including Just For Laughs, Montreaux Comedy Festival, Comedy Stand-Up Africa and more.
